Curators Note : Discover India

Discover India is a landmark art exhibition celebrating the distinctively Indian aesthetic milieu expressed through contemporary visual art - mapping the bold and vibrant inspiration of artists that are shaping India’s powerful cultural diagesis. Today’s Indian contemporary artists draw upon a wellspring of an aesthetic tradition older than 5000 years, and yet they also capture the essence of the global culture and our times through bold individual expressions, shaping a new, contemporary legacy.

The present exhibition portrays a sophisticated yet vibrant and dynamic creative perspective, a collection of quintessential landscapes, emotive figuratives, imaginative abstracts…; works that map the distinctively Indian symphony of contemporary visual aesthetics. The collection explores the complex matrix of India, unravelling some tangible, some subtle layers …spanning the geo-cultural breadth of India – expressed in paintings, sculpture, photographs, and installation. The show offers a fresh window to the creativity of some highly-acclaimed artists, and some promising young talent at the same platform, from Goa and all over India.

Anuanay Chaubey, Dhiraj Pednekar, Saheel Khan and Meenaxi Sadalage have painted captivating, yet very different landscapes, portrayals of places where land - and human hopes - meet the waters of the earth. Ayesha Seth, Ambalika Chitkara, Adittee Garg and Kausalya Gadekar explore the essential interactions between the eternal and earthly feminine. Ramesh Gorjala breathes vibrant life into a glimpse of mythology, while Chaitali Morajkar and Nandini Raikar capture the tenuous connection of humanity with nature and divinity. Satya Pal’s canvases depict the age old folk lore of Indian tribes, while on a diametrically different note, Yolanda De Sousa’s canvases offer a witty glimpse of the uniquely Goan life and sensibility. Loretti Pinto’s installation captures the timeless human pathos, of journeys and the journey of life. Balu Sadalge’s canvases have the charm of timeless temples while Roma Madan Soni’s landscapes charm the viewer with a wondrous beauty – now of quaint homesteads, and now of creation itself. Neerja Chandna Peters, Sandesh Khule, Ritu Chopra, and Sujata Agrawal have boldly pursued man’s timeless quest to fathom, and perhaps even tame a fraction of the unbounded powers of the cosmos. Darpan Kaur’s untrammelled abstracts are a song to the sky, and Subodh Kerkar’s joyous take on Goan life is a celebration of life itself!!

The viewer is invited into these artists’ bounteous inner world of beauty.., and in a glimmer, discover the beauty of all of India!
