The Two Worlds...

( Dream/Reality ) Two worlds: the human figure in her strength and inner centeredness and the outer world of myriad colours that has a life of its own.
These two worlds are simultaneously experienced. Earlier, my paintings had been focussed on the inner experience, using natural floral forms as symbols of the inner being. I am now exploring the artifice that dominates visual experience. The sarees, and other clothes, and toy birds, are images culled from the everyday manmade material world and they are juxtaposed with the figure the natural bird. But in no way is this a comment or a negation of one or the other; it is just the polarity the inner- the outer- that has been my preoccupation in these painting's.
But most important is the transition from creations of depth to a relative flatness; the intermingling of round and flat surfaces which was always in my work due to the stark black background, now becomes more complex. The focus is on colour and the patterns created by placement of forms on the surface.
The handling of brush is looser - many of the forms continue' from my earlier work but the treatment is flatter - and less controlled. The figure is no longer the sole focal point, it is now juxtaposed with other elements that have been given equal, if not more, attention.
The inner - the outer - which one is dream
- and which one is reality? The toy birds are bright and festive - the real bird spreads its wings and flies. For the human being her inner experience is the meaningful reality - in this series of paintings she celebrates the ability to retain her core and simultaneously participate in the patterns of everyday life.
