Artist Sanjay Bhattacharya has won acclaim as a water colourist, his works capable of creating a magic spell. Skillful handing of the medium and technical vituousity of his works amply display his talent.
Back in Delhi, after a long holiday, Sanjay was in high spirits and in an expansive mood. It may be because of his recent and very successful exhibition in Bombay, which was a virtual sell-out.
Nearly all these paintings in oil were reflective of the human drama. Even a kitchen interior of utelsils stacked for cleaning or a courtyard enclosed by a brick wall with a human figure close by and the like, came to be incorporated in the pictorial compositions. Elsewhere it could be an empty dark room, illuminated by light coming through coloured glasses, or it could be two men around a chula, engaged in preparing sweet meats, "mithaiwala".
It was the spontaneous reaction from the ordinary viewers and their appreciation moved him considerably as, he clarified.
... If in most cases, draughtsmanship of linear quality is a distinctive feature, no less noticable are the colour aspects, especially fine blendings and effects at places. It is more remarkable in respect of the dark backgrounds in certain instances, due to skillful use of brown and darkish green.
Referring to the question of theme, Sanjay admitted that he hardly not constiously choose anything. ... If realistic rendering is the artist's forte, he sees no reason to attempt another mode, rather feels prompted to stick and develop his style further that way. He mentioned in this connection how he continues to have a special liking for water colour, no matter if he works in oil presently.
