Gargi Seth Profile

Seth is Co-founder and Chief Curator, Indian Art Circle; and Fellow, Ministry of Culture, for research on Kalamezhuthu, an esoteric art form of Kerala. Awarded Pride of Nation award for excellence in 2019, she is an art curator, writer & consultant for the last nearly two decades and am currently curating for the Jerusalem Biennale 2019.

She is empanelled with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, for which she recently curated “India at 70” as part of Festival of India in Thailand; and with the Ministry of Culture for which she curated “The Epic Journey of Indian Art” for the Festival of India in Central Asian Region in 2016. She has been conceptualizing, curating and organizing high-quality contemporary art exhibitions at premium venues since the year 2000, as part of her flagship venture, Indian Art Circle and other prestigious entities. Among her exhibitions are, the Art for Kerala Flood (co-curated with Jatin Das) recently shown at National Gallery of Modern Art, Weaving Legacy anniversary series, Spirit of Art series, Romancing the Figure and Edge of Reason. She has long and deep associations with artists of acclaimed talent like Anjolie Ela Menon, Rameshwar Broota, Jatin Das etc.

Her work involves cultural advisory, tourism and public diplomacy, envisioning and coordinating cultural conclaves and conferences, conducting seminars and art consultation.

With a team of richly experienced co-founders, Seth was instrumental in launching one of the world’s first fully comprehensive windows to Indian art online in the form of IndianArtCircle.com in the year 2000. The website hosts official Home Pages of some very reputed artists and art critics.

Seth is on the Expert Committee of Ministry of Culture, for Award of Scholarship to young Artistes in different Cultural Fields, the Art Education Committee, Center for Cultural Resources and Training, and has been panelist and speaker on several fora.

Seth was a university gold medalist and studied fine arts and a variety of social impact subjects like extension education as minors, as part of her Masters in Science, from CCS HAU, Hisar. She mentored extensively under Mr. Keshav Malik, one of India’s leading art critic and litterateur. She studied Art Appreciation at the National Museum Institute, New Delhi, creative writing at British Council and observed and volunteered for curatorial practice at Seattle Asian Art Museum, Seattle and Museum of Fine Arts, Bern.

She enjoys creative writing, and has been published severally in magazines and journals. She authored the full-fledged and richly illustrated treatise, “Know Indian Art”; tracing the story of Indian art, right from the Harappan times to the Indian Post Modern art and "Kalamezhuthu: Rediscovering an Esoteric Art", based on Kalamezhuthu art of Kerala.

In more than 18 years of her practice, Seth has also always provided a platform to young and upcoming artists and exponents, through physical & online projects, often on the same platform as some of the most senior ones. Under the aegis of Indian Art Circle, she has also regularly promoted the cause of charitable institutions and donated exhibition proceeds to them.
