Once a favourite entertainment
medium for the young and old alike in rural India, the art of puppetry
is now confined to production of puppets as collectibles or souvenirs.
The puppet shows are now done primarily for the enchanted foreign tourists
save in the rural heartland where the invasion of electronic media is still
low.
Puppets in Rajasthan are made from
left-over fabrics from the tailors and are stuffed, again with fabric wool.
The faces are done with wood-pulp and the result is brilliant hued beautiful
men, women and animals in various costumes and roles.
