"Glass is the ideal medium for artistic expression. The Indian theme of Ganesha fascinated me not only for it's aesthetic potential but as much for its underlying philosophy and as much for the opportunity it gave me to explore our worlds - apparently so different but actually so similar. Geographical boundaries or linguistic differences do not apply to artistic expression - which like the essence of Jesus or Buddha communicates directly with ones soul.Art glass has gained a tremendous international momentum since the 50's as a mainstream sculptural medium. And the maestri of Murano are probably its most coveted custodians in the world today having innovated & perfected skills & techniques over a thousand years old in blowing and hot sculpting that can facilitate the realization of even the most challenging imagination of an artist's.
But working with glass can become an irrational compulsion - fraught with technical obstacles and the obsession to exploit & control the material. Thus it is essential to remain detached from what one creates, but the struggle itself often manifests into an exceptional result.
I am drawn to the rich symbolism of Indian Iconism and the application of Art Glass as a medium for it. I am partial to the spacialist-influenced Lingams with their near perfect proportions and vaguely bionic other worldly suggestion. Anjolie's 'Heads' convey the enigma and wisdom of ages past and yet to come.
It is very stimulating to collaborate with artists who traditionally work with other media. Their fresh approach to glass initiates innovations and path breaking results. I shall always cherish the creative process I shared with Anjolie. She possesses apart from her tremendous talent, a humility and purity of intent that I could relate with. Ego is a limiting quality that hinders true creativity & spirituality and I am deeply thankful for this project which allowed me to explore further the spirituality in art and the art in prayer."
